Agi Pagkatipunan

AGI, the “WOOD WIZARD” as he is fondly called by his contemporaries, was raised and born in Maly, a small Barangay in San Mateo, a hilly Province of Rizal. He studied Bachelor of Science in Architecture at the Central Colleges of the Philippines.

AGUILARDO “AGI” PAGKATIPUNAN is a celebrated Furniture Maker and Designer. An Architect turned to Carpenter-Sculptor and Interior Designer. He breathes life into salvaged and recycled Philippine Hardwood and uses it as a medium to express his artistic sensibilities.

He started out as Architect. His obsession with wood and passion to create resulted in unique works of “AGI’s Functional Sculpture” as he lovingly refers to the fruit of labor bears soul and depth masterfully crafted from old woods. The outcome pieces spear volumes of his artistry and craftsmanship.

Agi himself, his values and views…

“Given things may be wasted in the present possession, try to keep them time will come and dictate you on how to define and read them artistically”…

“I never sacrifice my values; I’m always willing to walk away from any client. I’ve done it before and will continue to do so when my principles are on the line.”

“The form of wood suggests the kind of design, so that the more materials I have, the more designs I can create”…

“Kaya nalulungkot ako kapag kumokonte ang mga kahoy ko” (That’s why I’m always upset when I feel my lumber yard is decreasing).

The late sculptor Maestro Jerry Araos & Maestro Luis E. Yee Jr. my mentor, (I called them Tatay), has a big role on my artistry and who influenced to “talk to the wood”. Maybe because, I spent most of my spare time hanging with them, not only for troll talks, but mostly those pertaining to art & sex.

Frank Loyd Wright is also one of my inspirations in Architecture design, and I still practice the “Function follows form and form follows function” of Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris or better known as “Le Corbusier”.

“Mabubuhay ako para sa aking Sining at ang Sining ko ang bumubuhay sa akin.”
